McGill Law

McGill University’s Faculty of Law is one of the best-known law schools in Canada, and its name carries well beyond it. Here are 9 reasons why McGill could be your top choice for law school:

1. Global Recognition: McGill consistently ranks among the top law schools in Canada and around the world. This prestigious reputation will be recognized by employers and colleagues worldwide.

2. Dual Degrees, Double the Advantage: Get two degrees for (almost) the price of one! McGill’s transsystemic program teaches the civil law and common law traditions side by side and grants you both a BCL (Bachelor of Civil Law) and a JD (Juris Doctor). This prepares you for practice in both legal systems, giving you a lot of flexibility in your career.

3. Unbeatable Value: Education shouldn’t break the bank. McGill’s tuition is low by Canadian law school standards, especially for Quebec residents. Plus, most readings are digital, saving you even more on textbooks.

4. Diverse Career Paths: With a McGill Law degree, the world is your oyster. The school’s reputation and your dual degrees open doors in Canada and internationally. You’ll be well-positioned for a career in a variety of sectors, including big law firms, academia, and government.

5. Renowned Faculty: Learn from the best! McGill boasts exceptional professors who are not only talented researchers but also dedicated teachers. The faculty’s expertise and research centres, like the Centre for Human Rights & Legal Pluralism, make for a stimulating place to learn.

6. A Diverse Community: McGill Law fosters a diverse and inclusive student body. You’ll connect with classmates from all backgrounds and with a variety of interests. The school offers numerous student journals, clubs, and internship opportunities to help you explore your passions.

7. Supreme Court Opportunities: McGill graduates have a remarkable track record of securing prestigious Supreme Court clerkships. The dual degrees, emphasis on bilingualism, and strong academic reputation all contribute to this success.

8. A Historic Campus: Study in a beautiful and historic setting. The Faculty of Law itself comprises three buildings, each with its own architectural charm. Plus, McGill’s main campus has great green spaces and a mix of architectural styles, all located in the heart of Montreal.

9. Embrace Bilingualism: Canada is a bilingual country, and McGill Law celebrates that! McGill expects its students to be at least passively bilingual, meaning you can read and understand both English and French. Studying at McGill (and living in Montreal) will strengthen your French language skills, a valuable asset in today’s globalized legal profession.

Live it Up in Montreal

Montreal is consistently ranked as one of the world’s best student cities, and it isn’t just a backdrop for your law school experience; it’s an integral part of it. Here’s what to expect:

  • Foodie Paradise: Montreal is a haven for food lovers. From classic French bistros and trendy cafes to bustling international markets and hidden hole-in-the-wall gems, your taste buds will be on a constant adventure.
  • Thrilling Nightlife: Montreal knows how to party! Whether you’re into live music, buzzing clubs, or laid-back pubs, there’s a scene for you.
  • Walkable City: Forget the car! Montreal’s well-developed public transportation system and pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods make it easy to explore every corner on foot or by bike.
  • Affordable Lifestyle: Compared to other major cities, Montreal offers a relatively affordable cost of living, allowing you to focus on your studies without breaking the bank.

Beyond the Law Books: When you need a break from the books, Montreal offers a wealth of cultural experiences: world-class museums, historic architecture, beautiful parks, and exciting festivals throughout the year.

What About the LSAT?

Getting into McGill Law is competitive. McGill does not require the LSAT, but if you have taken it (or will take it), you must report your scores and they will be considered. So if you’re writing the LSAT anyway, or applying to other schools that require it, a strong score can only help your application.
